The Hunting - Tipiliuke Lodge

The preferred method of stag hunting during the rut or "roar", as it is referred to in South America, is to glass areas where the stags have been rutting, in the high plains surrounding the river valley or along the river. Hunters attempt to stalk within rifle or bow range, once they spot a shooter stag. Typical shots average around 150 yards with much longer shot opportunities readily available in this open habitat.

Hunters will be hunting on horseback from the lodge or out of Toyota trucks, and typically will experience 100% success year after year on great trophy stag. Most hunters average 1 to 2 trophies per trip and 3-4 free management stags as well. The trophy expectations at Tipiliuke are comparable to 300-class Elk trophies. Patient hunters can have the opportunity of something similar to a 330-350 class Elk.

In addition, the ranch sits on one of Patagonia’s world-renowned trout fisheries, giving you access to fly-fishing on 12 miles of private riverfront along the Chimehuin & Quilquihue Rivers.  California quail may also be hunted, with season beginning April 15th.  You can have the opportunity to complete a Patagonia “Grand Slam” with a trophy red stag, a dozen California quail, a Russian boar, and a Rainbow and Brown trout.

Species - Red Stag Hunting

The red deer is the fourth-largest deer species behind moose, elk and sambar deer. Red deer stag inhabit most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western and central Asia, and are also in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. Red deer stag have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

Generally, the male (stag) red deer is typically 69 to 100 inches long and weighs 350 to 530 pounds. Mature red deer usually stay in single-sex groups for most of the year, but during the mating season, or rut, mature stags compete for the attention of the females and will then try to defend those they attract. Rival stags challenge opponents by “roaring” and walking in parallel. This allows combatants to assess each other's antlers, body size and fighting prowess.

Tipiliuke stags are known for having great mass with dark chocolate horns with light ivory tips. Stags in Argentina are scored on the CIC European system.

What a delightful place Tipiliuke was - from start to finish. We were enchanted with the hospitality, adventures, scenery and the people we encountered. Already making plans to our return. ~
Al & Lynn Holland,   Florida

Tipiliuke is simply an amazing place that exceeded all our expectations. The pastoral setting at the foothills of the Andes, with snow capped volcanoes, sets the mood for a delightful stay where the staff of Tipiliuke has virtually thought of everything possible one might need or want. Fishing, horseback riding, hiking, and shopping in the nearby quaint village of San Martin are just some of the nonstop activities. A stand out is definitely the culinary experience. Tipiliuke's cook of 20 years hand makes daily all the breads, desserts, pastries, and everything else on your plate is uniquely prepared. Definitely one of those special places that demands a return visit.
Roger E. Lambourn,   Dallas, Texas
